Community Access to UNB Rock & Ice

August 31, 2011 4:52 am
Yesterday, the club executive received word that UNB Campus Recreation would be implementing a series of new policies and fees that will impact how community members will access our climbing facility.

For direct information, you can read the policy HERE and view the fee schedule HERE.

In brief:

  • *All non-students will now be required to register with Campus Rec. in order to partake in any sport-club related activities.

  • *In addition to fees paid to the club, UNB Campus Rec. will charge an additional $50/term (or $100/year) to access the building.

  • *A daily drop-in rate of $10 is available to access the building, again in addition to whatever the climbing club charges.

  • *UNB is unwilling to make concessions to waive the new fee for volunteers who dedicate their time to running the climbing club.

  • *UNB intends to install a controlled access point at the front door of the L.B. Gym to enforce this new policy.

  • *The date this is to take effective is Sept. 1st, 2011... although we've been told it will be delayed until later in September.

These new fees will not give community members any benefits other than to simply maintain the right to enter the L.B. gym as they always have.

Although it appears to us as if these changes are a certainty; the club nevertheless outlined their concerns to the University. In recent years, almost 1/2 of our club's volunteers have been members of the general Fredericton community. They give up their time to keep the wall open nightly, they run Rock / Ice schools, and they make possible our competitions. Providing a disincentive to these volunteers will no doubt impact the opportunities available to students who want to enjoy climbing. This policy will unfortunately hurt those who it intends to help.

It's our hope that the members of the general community who have made the club what it is will continue to do so. Please understand that the climbing club opposes this change. We certainly hope to see you all back for another year. Cheers.

* * * IMPORTANT * * *

Climbing Access to Cochrane Lane Cliffs

The following is the UNB Rock and Ice Clubs final arrangement with CFB Gagetown regarding use of the Cochrane Lane cliffs for UNB Rock and Ice Club members. The following will be a brief breakdown of public access and club member access.

General Public:

The general public must procure a day pass to enter any “Base” property, including the Cochrane Lane cliffs area for climbing purposes. This may be done in person, at Camp Petersville on the Enniskillen Road (located 10min. before Welsford coming from Fredericton towards Saint John). For more information call CFB Gagetown at 1-506-422-2000 .

UNB Rock and Ice Members:

Any UNB Rock and Ice Member or “Group” under the auspicious of UNB Rock and Ice Club shall telephone 422-2000 ext (3121), prior to climbing. It is not required to stop and procure a day pass to the site. A membership is now offered only on a yearly basis and is the responsibility of the member to renew their membership on Sept 1 of each year.

As with any agreement, yearly renewal will be contingent upon stewardship of the land, and safe and proper use of the area, as well as the particular conditions of the arrangement (available to club members through the contact information below).

Tour De Bloc 8

March 8, 2011 6:45 pm
Over last weekend the club hosted the Atlantic Regionals for Tour De Bloc's 8th season.

Getting ready for this comp is a serious effort. We pressure washed most of our holds to a new texture and ordered a few new sets along with some volumes from Nicros, and from the more local shop, Delire.

The comp had a really good turn-out! We had many local climbers as well as serious competitors traveling in from Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, and beyond. We even had about half of our Jr. Climbers squad show up to compete!

UNB Rock & Ice climbers showed up with serious intent and had a strong showing. Holly Reid pulled in a close 2nd place finish in the open women's finals as did John Bowles on the men's side (climbing completely off the couch... or so he says). The big story was the traveling Sethna family Erick & Elise, who both nabbed 1st place.

This is a huge job to pull off and many of the club's volunteers stepped-up with a huge effort. This especially goes for Mark MacDonald and Ben Blakney, our route-setters. It also goes for the big crew that showed up Sunday and Monday to reset all the qualifying routes that are normally lost after finals. It's something we've always talked about but this is the first time it's been done. Nice!

Ice School 2011 Run Down

February 26, 2011 2:02 pm
Ice School went down last weekend with a good crew. PES, Angela, Rob, Chris, and PJ lead 18 climbers out for a 2 day crash course. Demand went completely through the roof this year with 42 interested people but with limited gear and limited ice our numbers had to be small.

Hayes falls was in bad shape on Saturday. Although the smear in the woods was well formed, the main flows looked more like a snowfield than an ice fall. Despite sloppy conditions everyone seemed to have a good time. An overhang made for an ice bouldering session and some climbers were making ascents without tools or crampons. PES even bagged the smear in the woods while wearing snowshoes!Martina S. - Waterfall Wall @Chris N.

Waterfall wall was in much better shape. Steeper and more sustained the ice was fairly soft and the weather perfect. Most climbers got introduced to real ice climbing and everyone cruised.Tristan F - Waterfall Wall @Tony E.

Thanks to the keen climbers, and the great help from our volunteers. Also a big thanks to Greg Hughes of Kingston who lent the club 7 pairs of nice mountaineering boots for the weekend!

Last weekend we had the Reel Rock Film festival for the first time in Fredericton! Big thanks to the UNB Student Union and the Radical Edge for the support to pull this off. We had 125 people show up! I've heard a lot of talk that this was better than Banff Film Fest!

We will absolutely be bringing this back to Fredericton next year. Ohhh yeah!!!
