Ice School is a winter climbing expereince! Ice is a constantly changing medium and the line up the icefall is never the same twice.
We hold ice school in the dead of winter every year. The club arranges to have our most experienced knuckle bangers around to host a two-day outdoor session at some of NB's best frozen-over waterfalls. Absolutely no prior experience is necessary!
Even if you've never climbed on rock before you'll have fun at Ice School.
The weekend will teach the basics in movement, technique, and reading the ice on a variety of ice lines. You'll also learn about axes, crampons, knots, belaying, and how to avoid ice hazards.
UNB Rock & Ice will provide all specialized ice gear and the instruction. You'll need to bring food, lots of water, and layers upon layers of spare warm clothes.
The climbing location will change year to year, depending on the conditions. All are generally within 1 hour of Fredericton. Hayes falls, Welsford, and Mt. Misery have been good in the past. Transportation is usually never an issue and we coordinate a carpool.
Space is extremely limited since we try to keep the student/instructor ratio very low. Ice School is open to any member of the community but club members always get a deal and early registration. We fill up and have a waiting list every year so register as soon as it opens!
